Get a good vacuum that vibrates the carpet. This suspends the sand and other heavy abrasive soils long enough for the vacuum to "get a hold of it". I like the Sanitaire upright (e-mail me for the model number if you need a vacuum).
It's also important to have a tightly stretched carpet. Grab a few fibers in the middle of the room and gently see if you can lift the carpet. Now let go. Does it snap back? If it just fluffs down slowly its not tight. (We have people we can recommend for stretching) Tight carpets are generally easier to vacuum effectively and thus last longer.
Aside from keeping up on the spot cleaning, for a healthy home, you should have professional cleaning in most areas about once a year, more if you have children and pets. Over the course of a year your carpet acts like a huge filter, filtering out dust, pollen and other allergens. Having the carpets clean will help you to breath easier.
